Most all of the RAF’s fighter command kills during the battle of Britain were made with the famous Hawker Hurricane. Nicknamed the “Hurri” was very easy to fly and super stable as a gun platform. The Hurricane carried eight guns and could out turn any fighter in the sky.
A single-seat fighter aircraft built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. There were some Hurricane production carried out by Canada Car and Foundry Co. Ltd.
The design of the Hawker Hurricane evolved through the 1930s with various adaptations. This resulted in a number of different types of aircraft used as interceptor fighters, fighter bombers (nicknamed “Hurribombers”) and ground support aircraft. Another coveted version called the “Sea Hurricane” was modified for operations from ships. Another version called the “Hurricats” had modifications for catapult launched convoy escorts.
The Hurricanes together with the famous Spitfire gave the RAF the power needed to win The Battle of Britain in 1940.
Up to the end of 1944 there were about 14,000 Hurricanes built. Of these about 1,200 got the conversion to the “Sea Hurricanes”.
The Air Ministry wanted a fighter aircraft built around the new Rolls Royce PV-12 engine. It later became famous known as the Merlin engine. Aircraft designer Sydney Camm started the design early in 1934. His first plan was rejected and started over designing a fighter as a Hawker private venture.
The first prototype K5083 began in 1935 with a PV-12 Merlin Engine. The prototype made its first test flight with Lieutenant P.W.S. Bulman at the controls. Bulman was Hawker’s chief test pilot at the time.
The Hawker Hurricane did have a few drawbacks as a fighter aircraft. It was considerably slower than the Messerschmitt Bf 109e and the Spitfire. The thick wings hindered acceleration but it could still out turn both of the other fighters. Even with all of its deficiencies against the Messerschmitt in the hands of a good pilot the Hurricane could still destroy the Bf 109s. And the advantage was gained when the fighting occurred at lower altitudes.
