Mojave Aerospace Ventures the brain child of Paul Allen and Burt Rutan. The technology is licensed by the Spaceship Company and won the Ansari X Prize with their spacecraft SpaceShipOne.
The White Knight the carrier aircraft that ferries SpaceShipOne to 50,000 ft and is cut loose to fire it’s rocket for its trip into space. The package developed by Scaled Composites as part of the Tier One Program. The carrier aircraft is a jet powered aircraft called the White Knight registered as N318SL with the FAA and the model number is 318 by Scaled Composites.
The Tier One part of the program had it’s fist successful flight August 5th of 2002. The success of the first flight was not introduced to the media until April 18th of 2003 as the Wight Knight and SpaceShipOne.
The White Knight turned out to be a lot more than what was expected. In flight SpaceShipOne a pressurized vessel the pilot was able to see the outside world from space.
The first of the captive carry flight of White Knight and SpaceShipOne took place May 20th of 2003. Pilot and co-pilot were Peter Siebold and Binnie the duration lasted just under 2 hours. The launch system was qualified functional during the flight. The next flight fully manned captive carry with Brian Binnie and co-piloted by Bird Melvill at the controls of SpaceShipOne and this flight took 2.1 hours.

Tier One consists of SpaceShipTwo based on the technology of SpaceShipOne of Scaled Composites. The project fully funded by Paul Allen via a joint venture with Burt Rutan designer of the technology.
The second spacecraft SpaceShipTwo is designed to carry passengers into space. The craft will carry two pilots and up to 6 passengers.
The craft will rocket to an apogee of 68 miles (110 km) into the thermosphere. The new spacecraft will reach 6 miles (10 km) higher than SpaceShipOne.
The new spacecraft with a single hybrid rocket motor will reach 2,600 mph (4,200 km/h). The new rocket is called RocketMotorTwo.
The mother-ship White Knight Two carries SpaceShipTwo to an altitude of 50,000 ft (15,200 m) and reach supersonic speeds for 8 seconds. SpaceShipTwo fires RocketMotorTwo for 70 seconds which carries it to its peak altitude.
The spacecraft SpaceShipTwo makes use of a feathered reentry system much different than the space shuttle which re-enters the atmosphere at speeds of 16,000 mph (25,000 km/h) which required a heat barrier that needs high tech shielding.
The spacecraft glides decelerating into the atmosphere at 80,000 ft which takes 25 minutes to glide back to the spaceport.
The space travelers will get a stamp on their passports to indicate spaceflight. Each passenger will also receive their astronaut wings via award ceremony.
