The Airbus A380 is a 4 jet engine double-deck, wide-body commercial jet airliner manufactured by the European corporation Airbus. It holds the title of being the largest passenger jetliner in the world. The behemoth is so large many airports had to modify at enormous costs improve facilities to accommodate it. The goal was to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large-aircraft market that it has held for years with its 747’s. The A380 made its maiden flight in April 2005 and entered service in October 2007 with Singapore Airlines. The aircraft has been plagued with serious problems that Airbus continues to fix. The A380 has pickup the nickname Superjumbo.

Hughes H-4 Hercules Spruce Goose

Hughes H-4 Hercules Spruce Goose built by Howard Hughes is the world's largest flying boat. Plagued with many obstacles during its construction that Howard Hughes overcame. One obstacle was the U.S. government would not let Howard have any aircraft aluminum to build the plane. So Mr. Hughes built the HK-1 out of birch. The nickname Spruce Goose lead people to mistakenly think is was made from spruce. The behemoth cost an estimated $25 million to build at 1940s prices. Completed in 1947 Mr. Hughes flew it while running taxi tests the plane lifted off the water at 70 feet and flew for 1.6 kilometers. After the plane never few again and was mothballed. The Flying Boat resides at Evergreen International Aviation as of February 27, 1993 after a 138-day, 1,055-mile (1,698 km) trip from Long Beach.

VH-71 Kestrel

The VH-71 Kestrel is a high-tech replacement for the old presidential helicopters called 'Marine One' when the president is onboard. We often see one of the three lifting off from the White House South Lawn. The VH-71 Kestrel was to be a $6.5 billion dollar project. Scrapped by Obama when he discovered it was running 50% over budget, but he was overruled. The costs for the VH-71 Presidential Helicopter replacement program are projected to increase to $11.2 billion.

F-22 Raptor

F-22 Raptor an air superiority fighter has additional capabilities that include intelligence roles. The Raptor is invisible to radar in stealth mode and has the ability to shoot down cruise missiles. Very efficient, the Raptor is able to spend much of its flight time at supersonic speeds. The F-22 is highly maneuverable, in all flight modes. With many cost overruns the original $1.67 billion cost is a mere drop in the bucket of the real cost of these deadly aircraft.

P-8A Poseidon

The P-8A Poseidon at $290 million a plane sounds like a real bargain. The P-8A Poseidon capability is long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.

V-22 Osprey

The V-22 Osprey at $118 million a pop the part-plane, part-helicopter the Bell-Boeing tilt rotor takes off vertically but can fly further and faster than a chopper. The functionality does indeed exceed the capability of conventional helicopters. The model has suffered many crashes with loss of life along the way.
