Model Airplane Kits
A common form of manufacturing for kits is injection molded polystyrene plastic, using carbon steel molds.
This is mostly done in China, Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea, and Eastern Europe.
Another form is injection- molding; this type allows a high degree of precision and automation not found in other manufacturing processes.
Ready-made models (desk or table top models) include those produced in fiberglass for travel agents and aircraft manufacturers, as well as collector’s models made from die-cast metal and plastic.
Most all of the world's airlines allow their fleets of aircraft to be modeled as a form of publicity.
In the past, airlines would order large models of their aircraft and supply them to travel agencies as a promotional item.
Static Plastic Model Aircraft
Static plastic model aircraft are built to scale; you do find them made from wood, metal and paper. Scale models are sold many different ways. You can find model airplanes painted and assembled, painted but not assembled (snap-fit) or unpainted and not assembled. One of the most popular types of aircraft to model manufactures is commercial airliners and military aircraft.
We do not have as many manufacturers today as we had in the 1970s, but many of the older kit’s can be located if you know where to find them.
Plastic model aircraft are modeled in many "scales". The scale notation is the size in relation to the actual size of the real aircraft. For example 1:8th scale is equal to one inch to every 8 inches of the real aircraft.
Some of the most popular scales are, in order of size, 1:144, 1:72 (the most numerous), 1:48, 1:32, 1:24, 1:16, 1:8 and 1:4. The European models are available at more metric scales such as 1:50. The highest quality models are made from injection-molded plastic or cast resin. Models made from Vacuum formed plastic are generally for the more skilled builder.
